Miami Vice
I thought the movie was slick and stylish, yet Mann gave absolutely no nods towards one of the biggest t.v shows of all time, aside from the characters having the same names and residing in Miami.
Where was the boat? The alligator? The ex-wife? The kid? Where was Miami? The scenes shot there could have pretty much been anywhere on the coastline of the States. Mann reportedly said a few years back that Miami isn't an interesting place to him anymore. Well he made that quite apparent with his new version of Miami Vice.
I, against popular opinion, actually thought he made a good choice in Farell. I don't really like the guy but he seems to be convincing in most of his roles, and who's better to play a party hard, rough around the edges renegade than a party hard, rough around the edges, erm, renegade.. ahem. But as it's been stated over and over, Farell and Foxx had no chemistry whatsoever. They barely even looked at each other. In fact, Foxx's role could have pretty much been played as well by most African American actors, given the amount of screen time the guy had.
I came out of the movie feeling like I wanted to hit a club, drink mojito's and pick up a model. Which I did, almost.
Miami Vice was a slick cop story with a shaky plot and cool visuals. But if you're looking for any references to the series then forget it, aside from a crap cover version of In The Air tonight thrown on during the end credits (originally sung by Phil Collins in the series pilot).
What was great about the series was the style, the attitude, the music. The film got one out of three of those right.

Swordfish
This was a decent action movie with a strong cast with the likes of John Travolta, Don Cheadle, Halle Berry, and Hugh Jackman. Travolta comes across as unconvincing in the role he plays, and sometimes he rushes through important scenes in the movie. Berry is decent as Ginger, his assistant and a secret DEA agent. Her nude scene was nice too. Jackman gives a good performance, and had me believing that he was a criminal hacker. Cheadle plays almost the same type of role he played in Traffic, but this time he's an even bigger jerk. The action scenes are good, sometimes very exciting. If you like to see an intelligent action film, this is for you. If you like to see the beautiful Halle Berry show off her perfect body, then this is the movie for you.

Sex and the City
This is a lovely film for women everywhere and their partners. Girl bonding is stronger than superglue, in some cases, and these women rarely let each other down or to suffer life's disappointments alone. As the four close friends, the cast is wonderful, as Parker, Davis, Cattrall and Nixon continue their hit roles from the long-running HBO series. Noth, too, reprises his role as the supreme Manhattan catch of the decade, as he is most handsome and engaging. The rest of the cast is quite fine as well.
The costumes, naturally, are out of this world, so as to make one dizzy with admiration for the designer togs and accessories. Likewise, the setting in Manhattan is lovely and "happening" while the writing, direction, and production values are all above average. Then, too, even if you have never seen an episode of the original series, you can still enjoy this movie where every viewer is brought up to speed on past and present occurrences. However, if you are devoted fan, you will be delighted to continue the adventures of these ladies. One word of caution to those unfamiliar with the television show. The word "sex" in the title is significant, for although there is no overabundance of activity, these girls do have some very close and eyebrow-raising encounters with the opposite gender, from time to time. All in all, however, this movie is about friendship and how it brings us great times and helps us, ultimately, bear the human condition.

S.W.A.T.
This is a pretty decent yarn with some good action and suspense in it. The story is almost believable. A drug dealer is detained by the Police and offers $100 million to anyone who can spring him. The offer is taken up by several people and the Los Angeles Police Department finds itself outgunned. Their only hope is the newly formed SWAT team, headed by Samuel L. Jackson. The whole SWAT thing is new and no one likes it. While, today, many people still don't like the idea of SWAT teams, they are now a part of the law enforcement landscape. It's too "Military" for most people. The film shows the build up and some of the training of the SWAT team, and their duel with the bad guys in the end. It kept my attention and I found it entertaining. And isn't that what the industry is all about? I gave it a 7.

Dreamgirls
The legendary Broadway musical hit the screen, resurrecting the thrill of the original. That, in itself, is a miracle. I suspect that the miracle worker is Bill Condon. The story is told as if it revealed something we've never seen before and his winning innocence triumphs. The casting of Eddie Murphy was a stroke of genius. He unfolds a new inedited face and I predict a new career. The predictability of the tale becomes rewarding rather than annoying and I was surprised and moved all the way through. Jammie Foxx's unsympathetic turn manages to deliver a punch of humanity. Beyonce Knowles, Danny Glover and the rest of the cast are a perfect foil for Jennifer Hudson's Cinderella Story. Bravo Mr Condon!

Happy Feet
I really appreciated that this movie was as adorable as it was. If you are looking for a movie that will make you want to laugh and cry, and will definitely have you thinking (about taking dance lessons & about the world as it is now) then this is the movie for you. While the movie has some dark turns, it tackles the environmental issues that the whole world is being confronted with in a way that is neither overbearing, nor too old for children. Not only did this movie make me want a penguin of my own, but it made me want to help our world stop over producing, and start preserving. More importantly, if you want to take kids to see this movie, its perfect. There's a good chance they will be waddling like a penguin for a week!

Weeds
What a clever, well written show. Immensely watchable and well acted. Mary Louise Parker is perfect in the role of a Yuppie, widowed woman making ends meet by selling Marijuana. The show highlights well the difficulties for single women not just at the upper end of the economic spectrum, but those not quite as well off. The language, although at times is strong, is realistic and appropriate.
All of the roles are interesting. Elizabeth Perkins plays the role of the acerbic friend who never quite realized her life ambitions. Her one daughter is overweight, the other just hates her, and her husband is sleeping with the Asian American tennis pro.
Every episode offers something new. I will definitely keep on looking for the next episode.

Total Recall
Total Recall is without doubt Arnold Schwarzenegger's best movie since The Terminator. Arnold fits perfectly in the role of Doug Quaid (definitely his best acting in a movie to date) the confused construction worker and Ronny Cox provides his usual evil plotting arch bad-guy. The impressive visual effects are worth the movie's $100million price tag, and Paul Verhoeven proved that, as with Robocop and Starship Troopers, sci-fi is where he does his best work.
What does spoil films like these, however, are people who cannot grasp the concept of Science FICTION, and refuse to suspend their belief for 2 hours(a vital part of enjoying these movies). Movies like this don't work without the overplayed violence, cheesy one-liners and stunning effects. Take away any of these elements and you no longer have a sci-fi action movie.

Goodfellas
If there was one word that I could use to describe Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas": it'd be priceless.
A surreal and deeply fascinating take on life of Henry Hill who was involved in the Mob for three decades and his rise throughout the time span (and Nicholas Pileggi's book "Wiseguy").
There isn't a single moment in the movie where it doesn't miss a beat, you could only tell by the atmosphere of the time period and it seems so real.
The performances in this film simply make it even more memorable and how the characters are portrayed here especially by Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci (who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor), and Paul Sorvino are believable and easy to understand that they were a family, very close and tightly knit to the core. Also, how director Martin Scorsese lets the movie pace itself and keeps the viewer off guard in what happens deserves a lot of credit.

Superman Returns
I'm always been a fan of Superman movies (both in the big screen and the small screen)....and this new Superman movie just blew me away....
Bryan Singer, you've done it again!!The acting is superb and the new Superman Brandon Routh is absolutely born to fit the man in tights. I really enjoy this film. Although, the movie is not "perfect" like what the rest of the critics world is expecting,it started rightfully where the Superman 2 ended.
There are dislikes of why Routh, Bosworth, etc.. looks so young...but fans around the world you must remember that this is a movie franchise. The producers need actors who can grow with their roles. Because if they're going to hire someone in their late 30s, Superman will definitely look so old and tired by time they finish the rest of the sequels.....OK???
